Robin M.

On my first day with one of my clients she had some family over because it was her birthday.  She made sure to include me inRobin_Murphy.JPG everything they were doing and made me feel right at home even though I had just started.  Even to this day she still makes me feel special because every time she is on the phone she tells the person she is talking to that I am so nice to her and that really makes my day.  I realize not all seniors feel validated and cared for so I try to demonstrate this to my clients because eventually I to will be a senior.

Marie G.

25.jpgIn my experience working with seniors I have found that sometimes family members have a hard time trying to get them to do things.  One client in particular never wanted to do anything her daughter wanted her to do.  I would do my best to get the client to do those things like physical therapy, bathing, going to doctor’s appointments and even getting dressed.

If I can tell that a client isn't quite their self that day or was not having a good day I always like to bake cookies or cinnamon rolls and just talk to them.  So many of my clients just liked having someone there with them.    One of the most memorable moments for me was taking one of my clients to visit his wife at the nursing home so he could be there to celebrate her 90th birthday.

When I was 16 my mom encouraged me to be a candy striper and I really enjoyed it.  I liked being of assistance to others,Tensye_Westrup.JPG offering comfort, and attending to their needs.  Working with seniors gives me satisfaction in the fact that I can help make a difference in their lives.  I am able to really get to know my clients and find out what their needs are and how I can help them in their day to day lives.  For example, I can tell when my current client is not having a great day so I will rub her back to relax her and try to help put her in a better mood.  I also enjoy talking about their families and hearing stories from their past.  It’s very interesting to hear how things have changed so much over the years and you can learn so much by just listening to them.

Doris B.

My inspiration for wanting to be a caregiver originated from spending time with my mother and grandmother.  IDorisBenson.jpg shared a lot of quality time with my grandmother and her wisdom was second-to-none.  My mother and I were together until the last moment of her life.  I cared for her as she battled dementia and I feel blessed that I was the one to care for her until the end.  One special event I shared with one of my clients was when I brought her a pink bouquet of carnations.  That really out a smile on her face.  If I see that a client is having a bad day I will sit and talk to them.  Sometimes all they need is someone to listen to what they have to say.  One of my clients likes to fold clothes together and another client likes to make meals together.  I love when they help because it keeps them active with everyday activities.

 Jeannie C.

Jeannie_Carr.JPGI have worked with seniors for many years and I have to say there are many things that I enjoy doing with me clients.  Each client has different personalities and I enjoy working with each one of them for different reasons.  I do enjoy cooking and it feels good when my client likes what I have prepared for them.  One of my clients wouldn’t even go to her son’s house without my soup and meatloaf.  Being a caregiver is so rewarding in so many ways and I would never want to do anything different in life.

LaDawn C.

I started helping seniors when I was just 12 years old.  I would go to different houses in the neighborhood I lived in and helpLaDawnCoates.JPG seniors with vacuuming, laundry, dusting, meals and dishes.  The hardest part of caregiving is witnessing seniors decrease in their independence.  I love being a caregiver because I can help them with everyday tasks and help them keep as much of their independence for as long as possible.  If I am able to help seniors maintain the highest quality of life possible then I know I have done my job well which gives me personal satisfaction.

Wanda R.-CCA

Wanda_Roberts.JPGI was inspired to become a caregiver while taking care of my mother after she had her first open heart surgery back in 1998. I received my Certified Nursing Aide certificate from Pruden Vocational Tech in Suffolk, Virginia. I became employed for one of Virginia's leading healthcare facilities doing hospice care. I worked in hospice care for about three years before moving on to the hospital setting. Patient care has become a passion to me.   When my clients are having a bad day we either sit and chat or we make plans to have a day out because it is usually due to their being inside for a long period of time.  I also enjoy cooking for my clients because if they are not having a great day it will always lift their spirits.  One of the common interests between my clients and me is arts and crafts. We make it our business to enjoy doing them together.  One client especially enjoys quilting and she tells me all about her projects and the meaning behind them.   We also like to shop together and dine out on a regular basis.   I recently received my Certified Companion Aide (CCA) certificate.  I wanted to take the course so I could better serve my clients.

 Lin L.

Picture_208.jpg While in school I realized the joy I felt in helping people.  This led to my interest in volunteer work by helping out elderly neighbors and eventually caregiving. I really love to bake so one thing I like to do for my clients is to find out what pastry they enjoy and then bake it for them.  I will usually bring it the next visit and will make some tea and watch their smiling faces.  One experience that was truly special to me was when my client wanted to plant some flowers in her courtyard.  So on a summer day we had lunch at a cute restaurant and took a drive in the country.  We went to her favorite nursery and picked out flowers for her house.  On the way home we stopped for ice cream and once we got back I planted her flowers.

Florine P.-CCA

I was one of the original caregivers hired when Home Sweet Home Care Inc. was founded.  I wanted to be a caregiver so I FlorinePretlow.JPGcould have the opportunity to make someone happy. To me, caregiving is a ministry--a chance to give lots of love.  I have been fortunate to have two main cases since I have been employed with Home Sweet Home Care Inc. and we have become more like family than client and caregiver.  I had actually almost gone into retirement but realized that I would miss being a caregiver so much and I couldn't leave.  I am currently going through the Certified Companion Aide (CCA) course to further my knowledge in elder care.  This course is offered to all employees of Home Sweet Home Care.  I have many years of experience in this field but there is always more to be learned.  The joy of being able to help clients better themselves and remain independant is all I want.

Karen E.

Karen_Ellis.JPGOne of my clients’ daughter's gave him a book on the history of the different wars for his birthday. He asked me if I would read it to him. So every day I would read about the different wars. I enjoyed talking to him about his life and what he did in the war. I enjoy learning about my clients’ lives, so that I can talk to them about happy times especially when they are not having a great day, also to be understanding of their feelings. Sometimes just being there for them to talk to is all they need.  I like helping others. I help friends and neighbors when they have problems come up. One friend took in her older sister to keep from putting her in nursing home. My friend was in need of a few hour’s break and I offered to help. I ended up helping a few times a week and really enjoyed it. Her sister loved the visits with me, as she called them. She didn't know that I was there to help.

Roisin P.

HSH_pix.JPGI treat all of my clients like family.  Everyone has their own way of doing things, so I do what my clients would do even if it’s not my way of doing it.  I find that this brings comfort to them because sometimes they can feel a little down because they are unable to do everything they once could do.  I have had some medical issues that I was able to overcome, so I understand that hospital and doctors’ visits can be potentially upsetting and being able to identify with the clients sometimes brings them a measure of comfort. I love meeting new people and I feel that I am a natural helper.  I find blessing others turns out to be a blessing for me as well.  Seniors have so much wisdom and life experiences. I enjoy finding out my clients interests and look for opportunities to encourage them.

Donna W.

One of my clients loves going to the Ice Cream Shop in Smithfield and eating ice cream while she shares stories of herDonna_Whitfield.JPG grandkids and how they love coming to Ice Cream Shop as well.  We also love going to the mall in the morning to walk around and talk to other seniors that are there.  I like being able to help seniors keep their independence because I know firsthand how important it is for them to maintain their livelihood without feeling they are a burden to society.   I help my mom and uncle with their day to day tasks such as running errands, cooking, cleaning and driving them to appointments.  I feel like a have a natural ability of taking care of my family members and I wanted to be able to help others in the same way.

 Terrie P.

Terrie_Phippins.JPGI had a client that at first didn’t want me there at all.  It took about a week of going there every day for him to finally warm up to me and start talking.  One day when I told him it was time for me to leave he said “Do you have to go?  Can’t you stay a little longer?”  I told I would be more than happy to stay a little longer and from that day on we have become good friends.  That makes me feel very special to know that he has gone from not wanting me there at all to now enjoying my company.  Years ago I started helping a friend with his dad when he got sick.  I had a full time job but I would go to his house at night so my friend could go do errands he needed to do.  My grandparents had passed and my friend’s dad really reminded me of my own grandfather.  When I would get home I really felt like I made a difference staying and playing games, talking and watching tv with him.  It makes a person feel good when you go home and know you made someone feel like life was worth getting up for.  That’s when I knew I wanted to be a caregiver.

IMG_2998.JPGI was inspired to work as a caregiver after helping my mother in her final years. I had done housecleaning for a number of years when I met an elderly woman who needed help with her terminally ill husband. I provided care to him and assisted her with housekeeping and errands. When he finally passed, I continued to help her until she passed too. From there I helped several clients before being hired by HSHC, where I have been able to help numerous clients since 2005 with a variety of illnesses and needs. One of my favorite clients was a woman who lived to be 101 years young. Her mind and spirit was still intact until the end; she was such an inspiration. When a client is having a bad day, I like to cheer my clients up by talking about their children or grandchildren, or even my grandchildren. Young people can help us remember how rich our lives are. My clients and I enjoy reading, creating a piece of artwork, and talking about the olden days. All of my clients are special to me.

I love to make my clients smile and one time that really made me happy was when I took my main client to The Yankee CandlePicture_220.jpg Store.  She has never been there before and it was during the holidays so the room was decorated with lights and snow.  Her face lit up and she was taken aback with everything.  Another memory I had with one of my senior couples was when he shared his stories from Pearl Harbor.  He was the Chief Gunnery Mate during this time and he made me feel like I was living a part of American history.  I love the wisdom and appreciation you receive from working with seniors.  Their life experiences are great to share and learn from.

IMG_2604_2.JPGI have been working with Home Sweet Home Care since June 2006. All my life I have been taking care of children and the elderly. I have a special spot for them in my heart; they all need so much care and attention. Whether they are having a bad day or a good day, sometimes I like to surprise my clients with their favorite meal or favorite dessert. Or even their favorite snack item from the store. Comfort foods can be a real attitude changer as can words of kindness.

My clients and I like to spend time together. We make meals together and watch TV together. We sit on the back porch together and listen to the birds, talking about places we have been, people we have met, and things we have experienced. I like my clients to know they are still interesting even though they are not able to many things due to their age and illnesses. Sometimes they just need to be listened to.

Nancy M. - CCA

Nancy MI started working for HSHC in February of 2009.  I really like working with HSHC and getting to know the office staff as well as many of the other caregivers I have met.  It is more like having an extended family than a work atmosphere.  In June 2010 I received my certificate for completing the Certified Campanion Aide (CCA) course.  We all work together to make sure that our clients get the best care from all of us as well as keeping up with all information from each client.

I enjoy being a caregiver because I feel that it helps the client keep to their goal of staying in their home as long as they can and stay with all the things that they are familiar with and love.  As clients get older and their memory begins to go, they seem to be more content in their own environment and to keep them there as long as possible is the main goal.

I have been a caregiver since I was 10 years old.  My mother died from Multiple Sclerosis when I was 19.  I learned at a very Picture_216.jpgyoung age the meaning of being a loving and caring person.  I feel that in order to be a successful caregiver you must listen and learn about the people you are caring for.  Knowing who they are as individuals helps you meet their needs and makes them secure and content in their lives.  If my client seems to be having a bad day I will make his/her favorite food and that always seems to work magic.  Every holiday means a lot to the couple I care for.  We share the joy of preparing for the times when they can enjoy celebrating, as they always have, with their family.

Claudette B.

The first person I ever cared for was my mother, after she had a stroke that left her without the use of her left side.  MyIMG.jpg brother had to work a lot of overtime but would cover the overnight shifts and I would get off from work and go straight over to her house.  It meant a lot to be able to keep my mother at home and we were able to make the most out of our time together.  I love to bake all kinds of things from cakes, pies, cobblers, and gingerbread.  One day I made gingerbread for my client and she told me as I was making it that she didn’t want any right now.  I was kind of bummed because I really wanted her to try it but I knew she eventually would.  Once it was done and I pulled it out of the oven she walked in the kitchen and thought it smelled so good that she would try it now.  She enjoyed it so much she actually got seconds.  It was so nice and really made my day to see her really enjoy something I had made.

Marie C. -CCA

Marie_Clark.jpgI sometimes feel that seniors are forgotten.  They have so much to offer and I enjoy taking care of them.  One of my clients was upset about losing her independence so we decided to make a Pineapple Upside Down Cake.  We talked and she told me stories about when she was younger and how she loved to dance.  Another client and I have a weekly tradition where we will go to Dairy Queen to get ice cream and talk to people.  I recently took the Certified Companion Aide (CCA) course to further my knowledge in elder care and received my certificate.  I feel that it is very important to continue your education in whatever field you work in because there are always changes happening and better information that you can be learning.

Roberta W.

Roberta_Wilson.JPGOver the years I have taken care of my mother, father, grandmother and grandfather.  I have also worked in group homes and nursing homes and have always felt the need to help and take care of others.  I always feel like I get more in return from my clients than I give.  I have been with the same client  with Home Sweet Home Care Inc. for 1 1/2 years.  He loves to go out to eat and take rides to where there is water and/or the country side.  We also talk a lot about the past.  I try to be a team player and help out in last minute situations when a careigver is unable to go to work due to an illness or family emergency.

I have been working with Home Sweet Home Care since May 2009.  I decided to become a caregiver while working in a doctor’s office. I have always been interested in how the elderly patients were doing and felt real empathy toward them. It didn’t take them long to learn that I wanted to hear about their day. Needless to say I have always liked helping people, and being around those who need assistance and someone to talk to.  I love making people smile and seeing the difference I make in their lives and their families lives.  My clients and I enjoy just talking to each other. We also like to watch TV and cook together.

Most people probably don’t know that I love to crochet and watch sports.  My proudest moment would have to be having my kids.  Also, one of my clients told me I had literally saved their life by helping them, and that made me feel really good about my choice to work with the elderly. I can think of nothing more rewarding.

Susan N.

Susan_Norris.JPGI got involved with caregiving because I wanted to give back to the older persons of the community some of the values I learned from seniors in my youth. I love to cook and the inspiration came from Fluellen Jones who taught me that "Love comes in a 5 pound bag".  I would have to say that as a caregiver I enjoy seeing how diverse people are and that "young love" is ageless. I also enjoy listening to clients talk about their families and the history of how they got to where they are today. Every opportunity to serve is unique. I have been with Home Sweet Home Care Inc. since July 2009 and I love working for this company.

In my spare time I enjoy gardening, crocheting, cooking and I love to bake and make candy. I would have to say my proudest moment was when my oldest son told me he had become a Mason. My younger son soon followed him shortly after and by June they both became Shriners. My Dad would be so very proud of them. Most people would probably never be able to guess that I grew up on a farm, can still drive a tractor, and shoot a gun. I know how to grow and preserve my own food, sew, and I make a great coconut pie.

“I started working for Home Sweet Home Care in June of 2007.  My mom worked with a company as a caregiver in my home state of Nebraska so this is what originally interested me in this type of business.  I have always had a close relationship with my grandfather and even though I do not live in the same state as he does, I’ve felt the importance of keeping in touch and encouraging him through the years.  I enjoy building a relationship with my clients, hearing about their life and learning as much as I can from them.  I feel it is very important that the elderly are able to stay in their own home as long as possible.  It gives me great joy if I can be a part of helping them accomplish this. It is also important that primary caregivers get respite care.   I currently help clients with such daily activities as taking care of pets, yard work, sorting through mail, laundry, cleaning up around the house, preparing meals, running errands, having lunch together and sometimes just visiting.  My favorite vacation spot is Tuscany, Italy, which my husband and I were able to visit when we lived in Europe for 3 years prior to moving here.   My favorite food is Italian.   When I do have free time, I enjoy reading and gardening.  Most people might not know that I also enjoy working with young children (3-4 yr olds).  I teach a 4 yr old Sunday School class and attend Bible Study at Church.  My proudest moments include the birth of my 2 daughters, and I recently celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary.  Since working with Home Sweet Home Care, I have attained my Certified Companion Aide designation. I am CPR certified and attend any continuing education classes available to further my knowledge.”

 LaNette B.

I have worked for Home Sweet Home Care Inc. since they opened in 2004. I started working as an aide 33 years ago, andLaNette_Bent.JPG have always enjoyed what I do. When my client broke her hip, I took care of her dog in my home for five weeks; she was so appreciative. When she is having a bad day, I rub her back and give her hugs and that makes her feel better. We watch TV and have meals together; sometimes we sit at the dining room table for hours just talking. I look forward to seeing her every week; she has taken the place of my mom in many ways. I especially enjoy the stories my clients have and I like knowing I make a difference in their quality of life whether through shopping, cleaning or just being company for them. I am a 10-year Navy Veteran, my husband just recently retired with 30 years in the Navy, and I have a son who is a Marine. My proudest moment was watching him graduate from Boot Camp. In my spare time I like to read and take care of my own household
